デデキントの切断

　昔、「経済学をきちんと勉強しようと思うと数学をしらなきゃ話にならないよ」といわれて、「解析概論」高木貞二著という本を読んでみました。するとその本の最初のところに、デデキントの切断についての説明がされていました。

　それによると

　すべての数を S、T の二組の集合に分けて、S に属する各数を T に属する各数よりも小さくすることができたとするとき、このような組み分け (S,T) をデデキントの切断 (Dedekind's cut) といい、S を下組、T を上組という。
　そして、
　実数集合 R の空でない部分集合 S、T による任意の切断 ( S , T ) に対して、ある x ⊆ R が存在して、すべての s ⊆ S は s ≦ x であり、すべての t⊆ T は t≧ x となるような x は唯一つ存在する。
　この公理は、デデキントの連続性公理 (Dedekind's axiom of continuity) と呼ばれる。

　最初にこの話に接したときには、「なんのこっちゃー？？？」と思い。「これが理解できないと数学がわからないのか？？」と愕然としたものです、、、

　どうもこの話は、次のようなことを言ってるらしいのです。（数学者のかた、間違ってたらごめんなさい）

　実数というのは、いわば小さい数字から大きな数字までズラーっと並んでいる、メチェメチャ長いソーセージみたいな存在です。そして、その中には、１，２，３といった整数や、分数、有理数、無理数（パイやルート）が並んでいます。ところで、このソーセージですが、部分的に切れていたら、大変です。微分でよく関数Ｆ（ｘ）の接線とかいいますが、もしその接点がソーセージの切れた部分にあたっていたら接線など存在しえません。（それでは、微分（解析学）など成り立ちようがありません）。そのため、「このソーセージは、ぎっしり詰まっていて、好きなところで切って（切断）していいんだよ。」「だから、もう、そうゆうものと決めちゃうから。。。よろしいね！！！」というのが、デデキントの連続性公理というものらしいのです。

　つまり、以前話した仮説というものが物理学、工学、社会科学だけでなく、数学にも存在するということです。

　完全だと思われている数学でも、仮説というものから抜け出せているものではないようです。
